Piper's Poem by Matt Sheehan

The celestial embrace broken,
still shining blacker than a thousand asps
in the blast of a thousand beams.
There it just was,
just is,
just happened,
just as close,
just so near,
only to begin
the static march to the sea
that holds no death by drowning,
no splash to refresh,
only serving to rub my scarred, sad face
in a shattered mirror of discoverer's hope.
But it takes no being told,
no learning of any kind,
no science or faith,
no test or scripture,
not even eyes, to see
I will never be my father's sun
in this body he has given me.

  1. Matthew- what do you think of the idea of illustrating this poem for your senior project? That way you will not need to worry about a highly structured narrative. You will still want it to make some sort of sense but you could really go to town on the visuals. I could bring in some examples of poetry animation if you are interested.
